Incarceration

In 2001, I saw a catalogue of the items that prisoners make in California prisons for PIA, Prison Industrial Authority. They ranged from utilitarian objects that prisoners can use to upscale office furniture. I also found that the California State University system and the California Polytechnic State University systems as well as all government offices, both state and local, are required by law to purchase their office equipment from PIA. I began a series of artworks on various aspects of incarceration ranging from the things made in California prisons to the problems with the Mumia Abu Jamal case, to the growth of incarceration in the United States.
